Field note
The Cleanup Pass Is Where Voice Survives
An OpenAI Academy article about revising papers points to a quieter rule: AI can suggest changes, but the writer still needs a cleanup pass where edits are visible, reviewable, and chosen.
Revision workflow
Revision is safer when the cleanup layer makes changes inspectable instead of hiding them behind a polished final version.
The actual pain
Polish can make ownership harder to see.
Pain 01
A full rewrite can flatten the writer's voice.
When a draft is handed over wholesale, the result may look cleaner but lose the choices, rhythm, emphasis, and lived context that made the original belong to the writer.
Pain 02
Invisible edits are hard to trust.
If AI changes the text without showing what changed, the writer has to accept or reject a polished surface without understanding the tradeoff.
What it reveals
The bottleneck is not only getting a better version.
The harder part is knowing what changed and deciding what belongs.
Revision is useful when it creates options the writer can judge. A cleanup pass should make the draft easier to evaluate, not harder to own.
Text-prep principle
A revision workflow should preserve authorship.
Make changes visible, reviewable, and reversible.
Field note
The cleanup layer is where ownership gets protected.
Text preparation is not the same as outsourcing the final voice. It is the layer where a rough draft becomes easier to inspect, compare, and deliberately revise.
Readiness checkpoint
Before accepting a revision, ask:
- Can I see what changed?
- Did the edit preserve the point I was trying to make?
- Did the sentence become clearer or just smoother?
- Does the rhythm still sound like me?
- Am I choosing the edit, or just accepting polish?
Source signal
Have a source signal?
If you've seen a post, article, workflow, or production problem that shows where text breaks before the next tool, send it in. Useful signals may become future field notes.
Mapped workflows
Useful when revision needs to stay visible.
Second pass
SecondDraft
Review alternate wording when a draft needs a clearer second pass.

Use the broader Clean, Rewrite, Prepare, Publish model for deciding what the next handoff needs.
Raw paste
PasteLint Clean
